Surabaya, CNN Indonesia —
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of East Java (East Java) allows Muslims to wish muslims a happy holiday to adherents of other religions.
This was decided in a fatwa commission when the East Java MUI held a recent ijtima ulama.
The head of the East Java MUI Fatwa, KH Ma’ruf Khozin, said that his consideration was that the pronunciation of congratulations to other religions was part of social life. They view it as not belonging to the realm of worship
”We chose this opinion, congratulations, part of the social realm, not the realm of worship,” said Ma’ruf, when confirmed by the media crew, Friday (29/7).

”There is a matter of holiday greetings made by state officials, for example the regent [officials], and interfaith greetings are allowed,” he said.
According to him, it is important for officials because they must maintain tolerance in front of their citizens, by not discriminating, and maintaining tolerance.
”This is for them, because they have to nurture and maintain tolerance across their citizens by not discriminating,” Ma’ruf Khozin said.

Not only officials, he continued, congratulating other religions is also allowed for Muslims who are engaged in activities or live in non-Muslim areas.
”But also the workers he’s got a non-Muslim superior, or he’s in a non-Muslim housing area. That has nothing to do with non-Muslims yes there is no need [to congratulate other religions],” he said.
However, Ma’ruf acknowledged that the law of congratulating other religions is still a matter of debate among scholars. Some are forbidden, some are justifying such as the East Java MUI.
”There are indeed clerics who say congratulations are the realm of worship so they are forbidding, depending on the point of view,” he said.
